These stunning, one of a kind scarves are handmade in Yogjakarta, Indonesia. Using eucalyptus fiber cloth means they are not only wonderfully soft, but also much lighter on the environment than traditional materials.
Although traditional batik designs represented status in the hierarchy, and could only be used by certain families, the designs on these scarves are modern and free for anyone to enjoy. Hand made by Bagus, and a group of 7 young women he has trained in this ancient technique, each whimsical piece is a one-of-a-kind work of wearable art!
Batik is an ancient technique for painting cloth practiced in Indonesia using wax, dye, and canting (the traditional tool for painting the wax onto cloth). The process takes many days and people, as the design must be hand painted onto the cloth before dying it, then it must dry, the wax boiled off, then new designs of wax applied, and on and on until the final design is achieved.
